🚨 Attention: The German word das Relief does not mean "alleviation" or "comfort". For that meaning, use the German word die Erleichterung. This is a common false friend for English speakers!

Etymology: The word "Relief" was borrowed into German in the 17th century from the French relief, which in turn comes from the Italian rilievo. The origin lies in the Latin verb relevare, meaning 'to raise again, lift up, alleviate'. Interestingly, the meaning 'to alleviate' is also present in the root word, but it did not catch on in German for das Relief; instead, it led to die Erleichterung.
